Our History

For over 125 years, Mid-Cape Home Centers has been providing quality building materials to professional builders and homeowners involved in new construction and home improvement on Cape Cod, the Islands and the South Shore.

The legacy began in 1895, when Captain Oscar C. Nickerson gave up command of the schooner Abel W. Parker and purchased what would later become Nickerson Lumber Company and eventually Mid-Cape Home Centers.

In 2012, what began as the Nickerson Lumber Company was sold to local resident Jeff Plank in a move that signaled the end of a long and successful era. For the first time in 117 years, Mid-Cape Home Centers would be led by someone other than a Nickerson. It was a moment to pay tribute to the company’s rise from its humble origins. It was also a moment to look ahead—it was a chance to grow.

Throughout all this change, one thing that has remained constant is the mentality of our team. From the forklift operators and kitchen designers to the hardware specialists and contractor sales agents, everyone who puts on a Mid-Cape shirt is invested in their fellow associates, in the company, and in every single customer who walks in the front door. When you choose Mid-Cape, you choose honest service from genuine people.

At Mid-Cape Home Centers, all of our team members have the important job of representing who we are and what we stand for. That’s why we believe that if always making the customer happy is the foundation of a successful business, then showing your staff how much you value them is the very ground upon which that foundation can be built. Company President Jack Stevenson puts it this way — “our people drive our business; you just can’t do it without them. On September 1st, 2021, US LBM, a leading distributor of specialty building materials in the United States, acquired Mid-Cape Home Centers. “We’re excited for this partnership with US LBM, which shares our focus on quality, service, community involvement and people,” said Mid-Cape President and General Manager Jack Stevenson, who will continue to lead Mid-Cape’s day-to-day operations. “Together, Mid-Cape and US LBM will set an even higher bar, as we remain committed to our loyal customers, local communities and mission to be the supplier of choice in Southeastern Massachusetts. Our customers will have access to a wider range of technologies, materials and offerings while relying on the team they know and trust.”
